Hard living and Racy Headlines? I’ll remember Ms. Winehouse for her one-of-a-kind sense of style. Throwback sailor tattoos and ballet slippers. A hardnosed librarian’s beehive from the 60s teased to preposterous proportions. Multi-colored bra straps proudly peeking though wispy shirts. Amy’s style was a breath of fresh air when she made her worldwide debut with her sophomore album, and it’s what I’ll remember her for today.
In the next few days, I’ll be mining media archives to present an Amy Winehouse Look Book to remind us of her pretty/tough style. Stay Tuned.
With 90 and above degree weather in 40 states this past week, we girls of summer know that heavy, full-faced makeup will, in a matter of minutes, melt. right. off. So while the glossy fashion magazines gear us up for the rich hues of fall, I’m still stuck on my minimal, but beachy summer look, shown here. Here’s how to get the look:
Next I spritz any zits with Eminence Organics Stone Crop Hydrating Mist. (It’s laced with salicylic acid, which helps heal blemishes.) Finally, I throw on some moisturizer and let it seep in while I reach for a few key makeup products:
Two of my favorite things Chanel’s beauty line directed by Peter Philips meets ROBOTS (another longtime obsession). In short I heart this video and me thinks you will too! Enjoy!!
So…exciting news. I’ll be relaunching erikastalder.com as a teen mag this summer. Woot! And I’m looking for a few teens to test and review beauty products for the site. Sound fun? If you like writing, skincare, haircare and makeup and know how to meet deadlines, email me at erika stalder at gmail dot com for deets!
I’m not the only one coming out with a new beauty book this spring.
Facialist to the stars, Kate Somerville, is releasing her skincare guide, Complexion Perfection! And with it, she’s spilling on all-natural and super low-cost beauty tips.
We’ll be trying Kate’s “Strawberry Swipe” on as soon as we can get a hold of some decent organic strawberries. To do it, Kate says:
Cut a large strawberry in half, lengthwise. Take a fork and poke at the flesh a little to awaken and release the juices. Swipe the strawberry across your face and massage the juice in a bit, using small circles. Leave it on for about two minutes, then rinse off. Strawberry juice contains natural skin lighteners that brighten spots over time.
There’s also the classic cucumber calmer:
Grab a cucumber from the fridge and slice it into thin slices. Lie down and carefully place them on your face. The cucumber will reduce redness and swelling and calm sensitivities.
Spring is (almost) here! Will you be giving these natural beauty tricks a try?
Later this week, Vanity Fair plans to release its first e-book on one of my top 50 beauty icons, Elizabeth Taylor. This woman had such a huge life. Sure, she was famous for her multiple marriages, her my-diamonds-weigh-a-ton jewelry collection and uniquely cool violet eyes, but Ms. Taylor did so much to raise money for AIDS (way before it became fashionable) and in her heyday, was one brazen broad (she was the first star to wear lingerie-a slip–onscreen for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and in her personal life, would party with the guys). She’s definitely a Hollywood legend worth getting to know, even if its just posthumously
The e-book is a collection of Vanity Fair stories on Ms. Liz and will sell for $4.99 e-book readers like Kindle (from Amazon) and Nook (from Barnes and Noble). Its introduction was penned by VF Editor-in-Chief Graydon Carter. Here’s how he frames the iconic beauty in toady’s celebrity landscape:
“How to explain Taylor to younger readers,” muses Carter. “For comparison’s sake, there is really no one on today’s screens who comes close. Try to imagine a star who combines the talent of a Meryl Streep with the beauty of Nicole Kidman, the sensuality of a Penélope Cruz, and the notoriety of a Lindsay Lohan (although in a much higher-class way, and without the public displays of private parts and vomiting). Magnify that a hundredfold, and you’re still only halfway to Elizabeth Taylor.”
I couldn’t have said it better. LOVE!
The e-book will include stories by bigwig writers like Dominick Dunne; George Hamilton and William Stadiem and Nancy Collins, Nancy Schoenberger and Sam Kashner.
I’m loving all the cool, patterned manicures that fun-loving chicks like Katy Perry and Roxy Cottontail and have been rocking.
Minx, one of the major companies kicking out nail art, suggests we visit a “nail stylist” to get their cute designs affixed to our digits. Nail stylist? Err…sounds expensive.
So today, I did a little DIY nail art with polish I had kicking around the house. The result? A super cute, Ikat-esque, perfect 10. YESSS! (It reminds me of my favorite Thakoon for Target shirt too!)
Here’s how it’s done: I started by painting two coats of bright white MAC polish on my nails. After it dried, I followed with a few coats of Blue Satin by Chanel. After THAT dried (Total drying time: one episode of Mad Men. BTW, Don Draper proved himself to be SUCH a creep in the season finale, don’t ya think?), I rubbed a bit of remover over the top. That left the design you see here. One clear topcoat later, I had achieved fun nails for free!
Now, I’m obsessed with figuring out other ways to jazz up my nails.
Sesame Street’s stylish puppet has her own “Whip My Hair“ and Black is Beautiful moment, conjuring up rocking images of both Willow Smith and natural hair icon Diana Ross. YESSS!!
Shiseido Magic Mirror (image grab from Vogue.com UK)
Beauty bloggers at Vogue.com UK and Elle UK have reported that four “Magic Mirrors” have landed at four Shiseido makeup counters throughout Europe. The mirror snaps your photo, then shows you what you’d look like with products applied to your face.
The camera detects the location of your nose, eyes and mouth on your face, then, after you’ve selected which products you’d like to “try,” displays a pic of your mug with said products perfectly placed. The result is a precise display of how a certain lipstick shade will look on you without having to smear the sample product across your already-glossed pout.
Genius! Not only can you avoid applying makeup that’s been shared with countless other people (awesome, since dermatologists advise to never share beauty products), but you can see how a specific look will show up on camera (priceless when it comes to planning for picture day at school).
Now, if we can only get this tech Stateside, we’ll be in business!
